Tony Stewart Reportedly Detained in Australia
Filed under: Tony Stewart, Chevrolet, NASCAR Police Blotter, Stewart-Haas Racing, NASCAR
NASCAR driver and team owner Tony Stewart has been detained for questioning in Australia, according to a report.Speedcafe reports Stewart was allegedly involved in a physical altercation with Sydney Speedway co-owner Brett Morris.
The report says Stewart was upset about track conditions after hot laps, and he started exchanging words with Morris. While Stewart was held for questioning, there is no confirmation on whether he will face any charges.
Saturday evening, Stewart public relations representative Mike Arning told FanHouse in an email, "We're attempting to gather whatever information we can get our hands on in an effort to separate fact from fiction.
"However, we can say that Tony Stewart is not being held anywhere and is resting in his hotel in Australia. While we have spoken with him, he's still half-a-world a way, so figuring out what did or didn't happen is going to take some time."
After racing in Australia during the month of January, Stewart was scheduled to return to the U.S. on Saturday. No word on how his detainment will affect his plans.
Stewart is about to enter his 13th season of NASCAR competition.

Bobby Engram Joins 49ers' Coaching Staff to Assist With Wide Receivers
He's being hired as an offensive assistant coach for new head man Jim Harbaugh, but csnbayarea.com reported he would be working primarily with the wide receivers.
Engram had a 14-year NFL career that ended Sept. 4 when he was cut by the Cleveland Browns. He spent eight years with the Seahawks (2001-08) when Seattle was running the West Coast offense, the same style Harbaugh plans on implementing with the 49ers this coming season.

Villanova Latest Big East Team to Hit Skid
Filed under: Villanova, Big East
PHILADELPHIA -- Big East coaches try their best not to fret in public over a conference loss, considering how inevitable they are against even the comparatively lowly members. And lately, there's nothing lowly about No. 21 Georgetown, now on a four-game Big East winning streak after the most impressive of the wins, 69-66 over eighth-ranked Villanova on the road Saturday afternoon. But Villanova coach Jay Wright couldn't help it. The Wildcats, just two weeks after an impressive non-conference come-from-behind win over Maryland, have now lost three of their last four games, and two in a row. Losing to the 21st-ranked Hoyas, even in front of a home crowd at Wells Fargo Center, with a shot at sending it to overtime on the final possession, is hardly a reason to panic. Coupling it with a defeat three days earlier on the road to a Providence team with one Big East win? Maybe not panic, but something related to it.
"Up in Providence, we weren't even in the game,'' Wright recalled after the Georgetown loss Saturday. "We got hammered up there. We're not happy about it ... (But) it's all of our responsibilities, our team, our staff -- we can't get into these funks. In this league, it can go for a while.''
Georgetown (16-5, 5-4), loser of four of its first five Big East games, knows the feeling, but the Hoyas are now over .500 in the conference for the first time this season. They got a masterful performance from Austin Freeman, whose game-high 30 points only scratch the surface of how vital he was to the narrow win.
He scored 10 of Georgetown's final 12 points over the final 4:59, including three spectacular plays that gave the Hoyas just enough cushion: a putback of his own miss in the lane with 1:41 left, a long jumper from in front of his bench with the shot clock winding down and 40.9 seconds left and a near-blind pass out of a trap near midcourt to Nate Lubick for a dunk with 24.9 seconds left. Each came with Villanova trailing by one point.

The Wilpon family announced this week that they were looking to sell a portion of the Mets, citing uncertainty in the wake of the Bernie Madoff scandal. While the parties on the other side of any potential lawsuit against the Wilpons may believe that the family was guilty in some part of Madoff's scheme, not all agree.Steve Phillips may know the Wilpon family better than anyone after a 20-year association with the team, and he isn't buying it.
Phillips explains why he knows Fred and Jeff Wilpon are victims, not villains in this FanHouse TV Exclusive.

NASCAR to Use Smaller Restrictor Plate at Next Week's Daytona Test
Filed under: Crew Chiefs, NASCAR Testing, NASCAR
Teams will be issued smaller restrictor plates for NASCAR's upcoming Jan. 20-22 Goodyear Tire Test at Daytona International Speedway. And at least one Sprint Cup Series crew chief thinks it's a good idea to slow the cars on the newly paved 2.5-mile superspeedway."I think the decision was made to slow down the speeds because the speeds were too high at the first test,'' said Pat Tryson, veteran crew chief of the Michael Waltrip Racing No. 56 NAPA Auto Parts Toyota.
"It's a good move on the side of safety because no one wants to see a car go airborne at the potential speeds that could be generated with the plate they had last month. It will be better for the driver and better for the fans in the stands. Safety always comes first.''
The new carburetor restrictor plate will have a 29/32-inch hole compared to the 30/32-inch hole the cars used last month in the first major test session on the fresh pavement. Speeds reached 197 mph in December with 17-car drafts.
"By slowing down the cars, it will make the draft bigger and tighter,'' Tryson said. " Before with a little more power, the cars would spread out a little bit. I think now, we can expect to see the cars a lot closer together and more in one pack versus two, three or four.
"It's going to make for some great racing for sure because I expect to see more three, maybe four-wide racing at Daytona which is exactly what we saw at Talladega Superspeedway. It's going to be a lot of fun for everyone to watch."

Rossi's Verdict On Shoulder After Misano Test: Painful And Weak
Valentino Rossi took to the track today, to assess the state of his shoulder ahead of the resumption of official testing for the MotoGP class next week. Banned from testing a MotoGP bike, Rossi instead tested a WSBK-spec Ducati 1198SP, putting in a respectable 25 laps of the Italian circuit, just a few miles from his home, to judge his strength, mobility and fitness.
The verdict, according to a press release issued by Ducati Corse, is not good, but it is no worse than expected either. "It hurts a lot and isn't very strong," is how Rossi summed up the state of his shoulder after the test, though he added that the test "more or less confirmed what we expected." At Ducati's launch event in Italy, the Italian had told the press that he did not expect to be back at full fitness until May 1st, and this press release confirms those statements.

NFL Should Look To Hockey, Soccer on Flagrant Fouls
Filed under: Chicago Bears, Packers, NFC North, NFL Injuries
If the National Football League is serious about reducing vicious blows to the head, it can add a new rule that borrows a little from hockey and a little from soccer. In addition to walking off yardage against the transgressing team, football could establish a virtual penalty box that forces a team to use 10 men instead of the usual 11 for one or more plays after a dangerous foul.
An example of the need for such a rule came Sunday in the NFC Championship Game when the Green Bay Packers defeated the Chicago Bears, 21-14, for the right to play Pittsburgh in the Super Bowl.
In the fourth quarter, defensive end Julius Peppers of the Bears was penalized 15 yards for delivering a blind-side hit to the head of Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who has already suffered two concussions this season.
"He lowers his head, leads with the crown and it's helmet-to-helmet,'' FOX announcer Troy Aikman said while watching the replay. "It's a wonder there that Rodgers (was) even able to get up.''
The screen showed Rodgers rising slowly and with difficulty to his feet with blood on his tongue while Peppers argued with the officials. In addition to the Bears losing 15 yards, Peppers was fined $10,000, it was reported a few days later.
Despite the league's crackdown on such hits, the risk/reward ratio of these fouls still makes it tempting for tacklers to hit quarterbacks this way.
Even a loss of 15 yards is worth the risk if such a collision puts a star quarterback out of a game or leaves him at less than his best. So why not do it? Even a fine of $10,000 is a small deterrent, especially if a player earning millions of dollars has bonus money in a contract related to overall team success.

Marty Hurney Says Panthers' Not Throwing in Towel on QB Jimmy Clausen
Filed under: Panthers, NFC South
Marty Hurney, the Carolina Panthers' general manager, told The Charlotte Observer the team's No. 1 priority is to get the quarterback situation fixed. That's not a revelation, but then Hurney indicated Jimmy Clausen is not going to be easily cast aside as a bust. He still might be the organization's quarterback of the future. It also seems to say that Carolina is not going to chase Blaine Gabbert of Missouri or Ryan Mallett as Arkansas as the team's franchise quarterback with the No. 1 pick in the draft.
Clausen had a dreadful season in 2010. He was 1-9 as a starter and had trouble with accuracy and taking care of the blitzes. The quarterback has to be responsible for the extra rusher at times and Clausen did not deal with that well.
He was a rookie and needs time. Clausen was thrown into the starter's role because Matt Moore was not playing well and then Moore was injured.
"That's the No.1 need," Hurney told the Observer about the quarterback position in Carolina. "I think we have good players. It all starts with solidifying that spot. That's something that everybody in the league would agree with.

Nationwide Champ Brad Keselowski 'Will Live With' NASCAR's New Format
Filed under: Penske Racing, Chase for the Sprint Cup, Nationwide Series, NASCAR
TAMPA, Fla. -- Brad Keselowski arrived at Tampa's Busch Gardens theme park Wednesday to help promote the Feb. 20 Daytona 500 wearing a black jacket emblazoned with a NASCAR Nationwide series logo -- a proud nod to the series championship he won in 2010 but won't be defending in 2011.
In a posting on its official Twitter account earlier this week, NASCAR announced that drivers must declare themselves eligible for only one championship among its three national series, Sprint Cup, Nationwide and the Camping World Truck series.
That means Keselowski, who drives the No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge for Penske Racing in the marquee Sprint Cup series, will race in multiple series but won't be able to simultaneously accumulate championship points in Cup and Nationwide as he did this season.
And while NASCAR isn't formally commenting on or confirming the format change yet -- President Mike Helton and Vice President for Competition Robin Pemberton will address it in a scheduled news conference next Friday in Daytona Beach -- Keselowski appeared resigned to his fate.
"There's a lot of different ways of looking at it,'' Keselowski said Tuesday. "Obviously NASCAR has an obligation of trying to do the best for the sport and everything and I respect and appreciate that.
"I still plan on competing even though I can't compete for the championship. I still plan on living up to the commitments that we've made for our sponsors and for our team. I've had the luxury of competing in both series last year and enjoyed it. We'll just kinda live with it and deal with it this year.''

2011 MotoGP Testing Dates
Though Ducati's Wrooom! launch event at the Italian ski resort of Madonna di Campiglio was eagerly anticipated by MotoGP fans and followers around the world, with the chance for Valentino Rossi to speak freely for the first time since his signing with Ducati had been announced, it merely served to whet appetites. What the fans really want to see is the bikes back on track, to see whether Rossi's disappointing times at Valencia were just a fluke, or were more indicative of problems adapting to the Ducati.
Fortunately, the fans do not have much longer to wait. The compulsory winter break, during which no official riders are allowed to test the MotoGP bikes, ends on January 31st, with testing resuming immediately afterwards. The riders take to the track in Malaysia on February 1st, for a three-day test, heading back three weeks later for another three days from the 22nd onwards. Another three weeks later, the riders assemble at Qatar for a two-day night test seven days before the season kicks off for real under the floodlights, in the middle of the desert.
