Gil McDougald, Former Yankee, Dead at 82

Gil McDougald, the infielder who played on eight pennant-winning and five World Championship teams with the Yankees, died of prostate cancer Sunday at 82.

"Gil was a great guy, well-liked by the team and a helluva ballplayer," Whitey Ford said. "He was a good fielder and was always a fierce competitor."

McDougald spent his entire career with the Yankees from 1951-60, going to five All-Star games. He became the first Yankee to win Rookie of the Year, batting .306 with 14 home runs in 1951. He achieved another first that year -- the first rookie to hit a grand slam in the World Series. He was also for his versatility, playing every position in the infield except for first base.

McDougald is survived by his wife, seven children, and 14 grandchildren.

Jimmie Johnson's NASCAR Dynasty May Make Him Greatest Champion

HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- Jimmie Johnson joined his team on the crowded stage, hurriedly set up on the Homestead-Miami Speedway front stretch and, with confetti flying in the air, raised NASCAR's crown jewel, the Sprint Cup Series championship trophy, for an unprecedented fifth consecutive time.

Only seven-time champions Richard Petty and the late Dale Earnhardt have more hardware. And as the humble, low-key Californian hugged his wife, kissed his infant daughter, embraced his dad and gazed out into the crowd, Johnson was struck by something that helped him realize he had finally made it.

"There was a fan standing right up front with an 'I Hate the 48' T-shirt and he gave me the thumbs-up and said, 'Congratulations,' '' the driver of the No. 48 Lowe's Chevrolet recalled with a laugh. "I have people tell me they hate me, but they respect me and that's always cool. If this takes it to the next level, then right on.''

So it is for the most dominant race car driver in NASCAR history. The more he wins, the more trophies he collects, the more people clamor for someone else to step up.

How about, instead, we honor this great accomplishment and appreciate the good fortune to be witnessing sports history.

Everybody's favorite (English-language) MotoGP commentary team will be back in action for 2011. For British Eurosport has once again struck a deal to cover MotoGP, featuring the dulcet tones of Toby Moody and Julian Ryder, along with expert technical analysis by Neil Spalding.

British Eurosport will cover all 18 rounds of the 2011 MotoGP season, with the 125 and Moto2 races being shown live, and the MotoGP races delayed by one hour, a concession to the BBC, who have also have a contract to air the MotoGP races, one considerably larger than the Eurosport deal. Aprilia Performance Ride Ascendancy is a self-adjusting absorption ascendancy arrangement able of adapting to altered types of tires and additionally includes wheelie control, barrage ascendancy and a quick shifter; it?s basically Max Biaggi?s SBK system. The 2011 Aprilia RSV4 Factory APRC SE additionally includes a appropriate kinda-Alitalia acrylic job, a new, abate exhaust, afterpiece accessory ratios, a hardly revised agent with bigger lubrication (Aprilia claims no ability boost) and proprietary dual-compound Pirelli tires developed accurately for this model.

Aprilia RSV4 Factory APRC Special Edition has been revealed at the 2010 Intermot show. The special edition RSV4 Factory taps into Aprilia?s racing heritage, especially after Max Biaggi?s WSBK championship win this year and Aprilia having earned the manufacturer?s title. The RSV4 APRC applies track technology and experience to Aprilia?s supersports road bike, creating what Aprilia likes to call a benchmark in this segment.

The new RSV4 APRC special edition is fitted with features such as adjustable traction control, wheelie control, launch control and quick shift transmission. It includes some of the features of the electronic engine management system of the SBK Aprilia bike with APRC standing for ?Aprilia Performance Ride Control?. The package has improved lubrication and closer gears on the V4 engine, a lighter exhaust and an improved butterfly valve management system which is more closely matched to the Ride by Wire system.

The RSV4 APRC special edition is designed both for those wanting a more serious track bike, and for hobby riders who love this kind of superbike technology. The bike is even fitted with new dual blend 200/55 tyres which have been specifically developed with Pirelli for WSBK circuits. More details after the jump include spec sheets.

Ohio State Strafes Beaten, Befuddled Michigan to Extend Dominance

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Jim Tressel showed mercy to his counterpart Saturday. Ohio State easily could have set a scoring record against Michigan, but its coach backed off.

Either that or he wanted to keep the guy on the other side of the field employed for a few more years.

Because Rich Rodriguez is good for Ohio State. Not as good as Tressel, who has defeated Michigan seven times in a row, but pretty good nonetheless.

Michigan football is a mess. Long forgotten is the memory of that fast start that had the Wolverines talking big and quarterback Denard Robinson in the Heisman hunt. Once October arrived, Michigan turned into the Little Sisters of the Poor, with no apologies whatsoever to Gordon Gee.

The Wolverines lost five of their last seven and became a what-do-we-do-now mess. They play a style neither appreciated nor a part of Michigan football. They have a coach who seems like a nice guy who does not fit. They have a new athletic director who did not hire the coach, a guy who came from Domino's who might start knocking dominoes over. They are light years behind Ohio State, which has a piece of the Big Ten title for the sixth year in a row while Michigan staggers to the end of the season losing five its last seven -- which at least is better than a year ago, when it lost six of its last seven.

The disparity between the teams that once ruled the Big Ten seems cavernous. And it prompted Wolverines coach Rich Rodriguez to get a little testy and defiant when asked about his future as Michigan's coach -- though those who are around him a lot said he was not unusually testy.

Shawne Merriman to Miss Rest of Season

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) -- Shawne Merriman's first season with the Buffalo Bills ended before it even began.

Merriman was placed on injured reserve Saturday because of a nagging Achilles tendon injury, culminating a tumultuous year for the once-feared pass rusher.

The Bills claimed Merriman off waivers earlier this month, three weeks after he was placed on injured reserve by the San Diego Chargers because of a calf injury.

At the time, he was also nursing a strained Achilles tendon. In his first practice with Buffalo on Nov. 10, he lasted just 15 minutes before re-injuring it.

The 2005 first-round pick and three-time Pro Bowl selection also sat out most of the Chargers' offseason workouts and part of training camp to protest his contract, which expires following this season. He finishes the year with six tackles in three games for the Chargers.

Merriman expressed his eagerness to get a fresh start when he made his first public appearance in Buffalo a day before the Bills' 22-19 loss to Chicago in Toronto in Week 9.

The following Wednesday, he walked onto the practice field for the first time with his new team, but that's when things went awry.

During a harmless-looking individual drill, he backpedaled and then pivoted to his left before pulling up and hopping on one leg.

More Moto2: Marquez' Team Confirmed, And An Updated List

Less that 24 hours after posting our previous Moto2 update, more details have come to light about who will be riding where for 2011, as well as a few corrections on Monday's list. The most interesting piece of information to come out was the introduction of Marc Marquez Monlau Competicion Moto2 team. The newly-crowned 125cc champion will continue to receive backing from the Spanish petroleum giant Repsol, as expected, but will also be funded by Caixa Catalunya, a regional Spanish bank from (predictably) the Catalunya region of Spain. The team has finally decided to race a Suter Moto2 chassis, rather than the FTR chassis they had been expected to race, after Marquez and his manager Emilio Alzamora vetoed the choice of the team, who had wanted to field an FTR.

Patriots, Jets Set Stage for Monster Week 13 Showdown

Jets PatriotsNeither the Patriots nor the Jets looked particularly flawless on Thanksgiving Day. New England trailed Detroit 17-10 at halftime and needed a 21-point fourth quarter to secure a victory. The Jets, meanwhile, fell behind Cincinnati 7-3, before Brad Smith carried them to a 26-10 win.

But no matter how they got there, both teams now sit at 9-2, with the Jets set to visit New England in Week 13 for a huge game that should decide the AFC East -- and could, further down the road, determine which city the AFC's Super Bowl road goes through.

It took Rex Ryan all of 15 minutes after his Jets beat the Bengals to turn his attention to that game in Foxborough, Mass., next week.

"They're clearly the best team in football," Rex Ryan said of the Patriots, "that's what all the experts say. Except me."

Asphalt & Rubber was recently one of a few blogs, along with the usual suspects from the American media, to be invited out to Arizona for Yamaha's press launch of the Super Tnr adventure-tourer motorcycle (because we know Americans have no idea what to do with an accented "e?, think "tay-nay-ray" for pronunciation?or just cheat like us and say ?ten-air-ray?). Nationals Offer Adam Dunn Arbitration

The Nationals did the expected on Tuesday and offered first baseman Adam Dunn arbitration to guarantee themselves two draft picks if he signs with another team this offseason.

There would seem to be little chance that Dunn would accept the offer. There aren't a ton of great bats on the open market this offseason and power like his is always in demand. Dunn's thought to want something in the neighborhood of three years and $40 million, numbers that seem fairly reasonable in light of the two-year, $22 million deal signed by Aubrey Huff on Tuesday.

Of course, Dunn could also accept arbitration and remain with the Nats for another season. Doing that would probably get him a salary around $15 million, something that surely isn't his ideal option, but it is one that might have become more likely with the news that the Tigers are close to signing Victor Martinez.

Thanksgiving NFL MVPs: A Brief History

Most MVP discussion this season has centered on whether Mike Vick is a lock, but that award is still weeks away. There will be three MVPs named much earlier, on Thanksgiving Day, part of the spectacle surrounding the league's annual three-game slate.

While Thanksgiving football has been a staple since the AFL days, the first MVP wasn't named until 1989, when John Madden created the Turkey Leg Award for FOX's game broadcast (later to be named the Galloping Gobbler). The other Thanksgiving game originally aired on NBC, who declined to give a similar honor in their game, but that all changed when CBS took over in 1998 with their All-Iron Award. For years, it was just those two games, but then NFL Network came along to add a night contest. And in 2007 they added an award for that, too -- the Pudding Pie Award.

This year, the action is started by the Patriots vs. Lions game on CBS. That game looks to be a lock for the Patriots, so you can be the All-Iron Award will go to someone on their roster. Maybe Tom Brady can add another honor to his resume? The Saints and Cowboys play on FOX after that, and there are a number of playmakers on both teams who can take home that award. Finishing us off on the NFL Network are the Jets and Bengals. The Jets have gotten good at winning games late, so it's possible that someone will come through for Gang Green in the clutch again and take home the Pudding Pie Award as dessert.

Below is a list of every past award winner.

Patrick Crayton Suffers Wrist Injury Monday Night; Return Questionable

Already short-handed at wide receiver, the Chargers took another hit during Monday night's game against the Denver Broncos when Patrick Crayton had to leave with a left wrist injury.

Crayton turned a short pass from Philip Rivers into a 40 yard touchdown to put San Diego in front 21-7 late in the second quarter. But he covered the last few yards by diving into the end zone and he landed on his left hand. Crayton got up and started shaking his hand as if it was bothering him. He then was taken into the locker room to have the wrist examined.

Vince Young Not Banned From Team Facility, Titans Say

Vince YoungAccording to the Tennessee Titans, Vince Young is welcome around their facility.

The Titans on Tuesday afternoon sent a release to media stating that a report in the Tennessean earlier that day that Young was ordered from the facility Monday wasn't accurate.

"Tennessean reports indicating that Vince Young is not welcome at Baptist Sports Park are incorrect," the release read. "Yesterday, he was informed by a coach at the facility not to attend Monday's team meeting and was free to leave. The intention was to be able to talk to the team about Young's situation and how the team would move forward.

"Players that are on injured reserve are not required to attend team meetings. As of today, he has been placed on injured reserve and all the same rules apply to him as to any other player in that category."

Earlier in the day, Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean reported that Young "isn't welcome at Baptist Sports Park, at least not for the time being."
