49ers Have Little Room for Error at QB

There are reports in the blogosphere that Troy Smith will start over Alex Smith for the 49ers this week in St. Louis, a game that will make or break the 49ers.

Win and they have a decent chance at making the playoffs. Lose and their season is effectively done.

San Francisco won three of five games with Troy Smith subbing for the injured Alex Smith, but Alex came back two weeks ago because, coach Mike Singletary said, Alex Smith's greater knowledge of the 49er offense gave San Francisco its best chance to win.

Singletary hasn't publicly said one way or the other who will be the quarterback, but with Alex Smith having followed a strong game against Seattle with a sub-par effort against San Diego, it seems that Singletary is leaning toward going with Troy Smith.
But with San Francisco in a must-win situation, the 49ers aren't likely to wait long to make a switch if the starter isn't producing.
Both quarterbacks are getting practice time this week, which is unusual except when there's a good chance that both men will play.
