Paul Silas Signs One-Year Extension With Bobcats

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- The Charlotte Bobcats have removed the interim tag from coach Paul Silas, giving him a one-year extension that will keep him with the team at least through the 2011-12 season.

Bobcats general manager Rod Higgins announced the move in a news conference on Wednesday.

Silas took over for the fired Larry Brown on Dec. 22, inheriting a 9-19 team that was in disarray. Guard Stephen Jackson said a change was needed because "nobody wanted to play" for Brown.

The 67-year-old Silas has led the Bobcats to a 15-13 mark since. They're 1½ games behind Indiana for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Silas had been out of the NBA for five years and survived a health scare two years ago that left him with life-threatening blood clots.
