NFC North Takes Center Stage at League's Scouting Combine

Filed under:

Lovie SmithINDIANAPOLIS -- The NFC North, home of the reigning Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers, dominated the podium inside the media center Friday morning at the NFL Combine.

Bears coach Lovie Smith kicked things off. He was all smiles after receivinged a two-year contract extension through 2013, but the one trigger question that quickly erased Smith's smile had to do with quarterback Jay Cutler's toughness. Smith vehemently got his point across that this would be the last he would address that "non-issue," and reiterated that anyone questioning Cutler's toughness and leadership ability had no clue what they were talking about.

Packers general manager Ted Thompson took his turn 15 minutes later and managed to crack a grin as he explained that his approach to the draft won't be any different, despite having reached the pinnacle last season.

"It makes it a little more complicated because we've got some catching up to do," Thompson said. "Normally, we start preparations even before the Super Bowl game, so that's a good complication to have and we'll muddle through somehow."
