ATLANTA -- The 49ers scored 14 points in the first quarter on Sunday in Atlanta, but being quick out of the gates wasn't the winning recipe for San Francisco -- the Falcons kicked a last-second field goal for a 16-14 victory.In a game that was equal in many regards, from time of possession (30:41 to 29:19, in San Francisco's favor) to the final score, the determining factor came down to the number of 49ers mistakes. It's those mistakes that are the biggest culprits in San Francisco's 0-4 start.
"First of all, we played a good football team. They had something to do with (it)," said 49ers head coach Mike Singletary. "We have to get the ball into the end zone more. We have to stop doing things to hurt ourselves. Through the first four games, that's the story of the 49ers."
Perhaps the biggest miscue of the entire day came late in the fourth quarter, with San Francisco clinging to a 14-13 lead. On second-and-9 from the Atlanta 46, Falcons QB Matt Ryan threw an interception to the 49ers' Nate Clements. Instead of falling to the ground, though, Clements attempted to run the ball back -- Atlanta's Roddy White caught him at the Falcons' 10, stripped the ball and the Falcons recovered to retain possession.
Ryan then marched the Falcons downfield for the game-winning field goal.
