There were rumblings before the Rays traded Jason Bartlett to San Diego in December that the shortstop wanted a multiyear deal wherever he ended up. Sure enough, he got one. Bartlett has agreed to a two-year deal, the Padres announced Monday. The Associated Press reports Bartlett will make $4 million in 2011 and $5.5 million in 2012. The Padres have a team option for $5.5 million in 2013, or they can buy it out for $1.5 million.
The guaranteed part of the deal covers Bartlett's last arbitration-eligible year (2011) and his first year eligible for free agency (2012). He made $4 million last season while posting the worst numbers of his big league career.
