EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- No Redskin has been in Washington longer than Pro Bowl tight end Chris Cooley. And no Redskin takes losses harder than Pro Bowl linebacker London Fletcher. So it was no surprise that the two veterans were particularly upset after their team was dispatched with ease by the host New York Giants 31-7 Sunday. The defeat, Washington's eighth in its past nine games against New York, effectively snuffed out any remaining playoff hopes for the Redskins, who slipped to 5-7.
"I don't think we need to go in Monday and say this is how we can become a playoff team," said Cooley, who coughed up one of the four fumbles that the Redskins lost. "We need to go in on Monday and say, 'We need to start playing some football and winning some games.' Guys just aren't doing their job.
"Of course, I thought we'd be further ahead at this point of the season. I thought we'd continue to build as a team. I was excited about the prospect of what we were going to do early on. It seems to me we've diminished a little bit over the last few weeks."
When it was pointed out that Washington had overcome a slew of injuries to win 19-16 at overtime two weeks ago at Tennessee, Cooley responded, "But look at what Tennessee has done after that (0-2 while being outscored 37-6) so don't call us anything because of that.
"Everyone has injuries and everyone has (stuff) going on. Teams that win fight through their adversity. I think we'll get better. I think this team has potential to be an outstanding football team. I have no doubt in that. I have to believe that. But we're not there right now."
Fletcher couldn't agree more.
"(The Giants are) a fundamentally sound football team and we're not," he lamented. "It pains me a great deal to say that. We're talking about fundamental football: tackling, blocking, holding onto the football. That's not something you should be talking about. That's every-level type stuff.
"We haven't been great tacklers all year long. But today it stood out more because they made some touchdowns (through missed tackles). They've got great confidence going against us. Until we decide that we're going to stand up to 'em and fight, they've got a reason to feel like they feel about us."
As for first-year coach Mike Shanahan, who won two Super Bowls in Denver and averaged 10 victories during his 14 season with the Broncos, he felt embarrassed.
